Christmas Cheer

There are people in the local area who need help to have a happy holiday season. They may be ill, alone or elderly. As Alamance County residents have done in the past, you can make a difference by sponsoring one of the needy through Christmas Cheer. The agency has opened its doors in downtown Burlington to begin the sponsoring process 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may sponsor one or more children by providing new toys, groceries or gift certificates if needed for Christmas dinner and winter clothing if necessary. You may sponsor an elderly person by providing Christmas dinner and providing any appropriate special request. Donations of new toys, non-perishable food or money may be made directly to Christmas Cheer. The office is located at 331 S. Main St., telephone 229-9969.

Cuddly toys turn Internet pied piper for kids

Seven-year-old Ashling Cannon poses 29 October 2007 next to a computer screen displaying the Webkinz website and her webkinz cuddly toys in Washington. An array of cuddly toys is invading US shops, attracting an army of young fans onto an Internet networking site designed for children, many of whom are not even yet in school. .

Zimbabwe Select beat SA Composite XI

Zimbabwe Select turned on a spirited show at the weekend when they beat South Africa Composite XI by 10 wickets at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom, The Herald reported yesterday.

The match was in the first of the three four-day cricket matches in the Supersport Challenge against the SA Composite XI that was chosen by that country's National Selection Panel.

Zimbabwe Select only needed 57 runs in their second innings to claim the victory and this came courtesy of the opening partnership of Brandon Taylor (35) and Visimuzi Sibanda (19) and three extras.

South Africa Composite XI were the first to bat having won the toss and in the first innings they scored 288 before Zimbabwe Select replied with 493 as captain Prospers Utseya led from the front to score an unbeaten 115.

South Africa's derby hits world stage

The rivalry between South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates might be less than four decades old and born of a rather unusual set of circumstances, but the passion and intensity involved nonetheless make it one of the biggest games in world football. On Saturday, however, the Soweto derby will be taken from its traditional arena in the outlying areas of Johannesburg to the coastal city of Durban on the eve of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Preliminary Draw. In an historic event, Durban's King's Park stadium will play host to the two arch-rivals in desperate need of a fillip after a languid start to the new South African Premier League season. Both, in fact, go into the game languishing in the bottom half of the 16-club standings, desperate to use a positive result in the derby to revitalise their respective campaigns.

Have yourself a sarcastic Christmas

The people at Yellow Tape Construction Company — which is a theater collective, not an actual construction company — really do take the spirit of the holidays seriously. Yeah, believing in the spirit of belief is a warm and lovely thing. Really.

"We just wanted to have a little fun with it," says Yellow Tape co-founder Jonathan Morgan.

Games Asylum » The Simpsons Game

EA recently said that they were going to pull their socks up when it comes to DS development, and you can't argue with the effort they've put into this. It comes on the largest DS cart available, contains over twenty minutes of FMV, some 3,000 speech samples, a virtual Homer to play with and a handful of retro game parodies including Frogger, Space Invaders and Gauntlet. The thing is that EA themselves aren't responsible for the effort - Amaze did all the work. Oddly their company logo has been emitted from the start up sequence and isn't shown until the end credits. Bad show, EA.

Although now in 2D, it follows the same story as the bigger console versions, right down to each Simpson having their own special skills. That story being that the yellow fellows know that they're in a videogame and eventually discover that they have to face their creator if they want to escape.

For the kids: Toy wishes

An avalanche of toys that encourage activity and imagination are here for the holidays.

For the rock star in the house, the latest musical-instrument video games and karaoke software should fill the bill.

For the budding builder, some new kits from Lego and a fast-paced, magnet-powered roller-coaster set might do the trick.

Among the other offerings: a soft puppy that grows (and speaks), remote-controlled helicopters that duel indoors and a Barbie "doll" that doubles as an MP3 player and interacts in her own virtual world online.

These ideas, of course, make up just a tiny fraction of the possibilities.

Today, in launching our annual holiday gift guide, we've consulted magazines, retailers and toy experts.

Most of the items suggested are sold at toy, retail and discount stores; and through online outlets.
