South Africa's derby hits world stage

The rivalry between South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates might be less than four decades old and born of a rather unusual set of circumstances, but the passion and intensity involved nonetheless make it one of the biggest games in world football. On Saturday, however, the Soweto derby will be taken from its traditional arena in the outlying areas of Johannesburg to the coastal city of Durban on the eve of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Preliminary Draw. In an historic event, Durban's King's Park stadium will play host to the two arch-rivals in desperate need of a fillip after a languid start to the new South African Premier League season. Both, in fact, go into the game languishing in the bottom half of the 16-club standings, desperate to use a positive result in the derby to revitalise their respective campaigns.

Black Caps gear up for tough match

New Zealand coach John Bracewell believes his team can take heart from the way they pushed South Africa until the last over in the Pro20 match last Friday and the first MTN one-day international (ODI) in Durban on Sunday. South Africa won the Pro20 with a ball to spare and the ODI off the last ball of the match. "The recognition is that South Africa are a very good side, particularly at home, and any win is a tough win. We've got to take some confidence out of the fact that we pushed them to the last over in two games," Bracewell said on Wednesday. "We are starting to put together some batting performances the bowlers can attempt to defend. It's more about fighting every game, and seeing where we are after three games and not so much looking at the fact that we're one-nil down. "We've got to move together as a unit.

Simple fun with simple toys

Guitar Hero blasts a Lynyrd Skynyrd riff on the Xbox. Infant gyms in psychedelic plastic flash and beep and play "Yankee Doodle." Diego has a talking rescue centre.

Santa's elves must be getting more than their share of headaches at the workshop these days, judging from the sensory overload induced by this season's hot toys.

But amid the din of Bratz handbag-boomboxes, crashing Transformers and the chirping of the High School Musical crowd, there's a peaceful oasis forming in toyland. A small but growing group of toymakers and parents is harkening back to a time when toys were more about the wonder of kids than the wonders of technology.

At The Toy Space in Toronto, owner Randal Lee stocks toys made with all-natural and sustainable materials like reclaimable rubberwood, organic textiles and vegetable dye.

ALL-AREA FOOTBALL SOUTH OFFENSE: Four Sailors lead offense, behind bulky interior line

While Wayland Union captured the O-K Gold flag this season, league-rival South Christian made an impression during the postseason.

The Sailors are well-represented on the Advance All-Area South Offense, including their quarterback, his favorite receiver, workhorse running back, and captain of the interior line.

BRAD SHOUP Kelloggsville, Tackle

This 6-4, 235-pound senior was moved to center a year ago due to injuries, then returned to right tackle for his senior season, his third as a starter along the Rockets' offensive line.

"Brad is a great kid who worked hard to make himself better. He's really a force on the offensive line, excellent at finishing blocks," Kelloggsville coach Don Galster said. "He got better every week and really became a dominant blocker late in the season."

JAY MORREN South Christian, Guard

Jay (6-3, 195) excelled on both sides of the football for the playoff-bound Sailors, playing inside linebacker along with offensive guard.
