Things are looking good for this year's Bulldogs. Coming off of a 16-7 season, Byron Center returns four starters, including a couple of four-year and three-year starters. "We have a lot of experience on the varsity this year, and we're returning a lot of talent," said Bulldogs coach Glenn Davis. Headlining the returning players is fourth-year starter Logan Marsh. Marsh, a point guard, sets the tone for the offense with her quickness and ability see the floor in the transition game. Four other seniors also figure to play a big role in things this year for the Bulldogs. Lindsey Karsten and Ashley Wightman, a pair of starting senior forwards, can play down low and run the floor on the break. Lindsi Russo, another senior who comes off the bench, is a lock-down defender.
New families added to holiday adoption list
Families continue to be added to the list of those available for adoption in the Holiday Family Adoption Program. The Holiday Family Adoption Program, a Spencer-area holiday staple, allows generous area families, businesses and service groups to share in the holiday spirit and bounty. It's easy to "adopt" a family. You can contact The Daily Reporter Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 262-6610 and let us know the number of the family you wish to "adopt." Then the fun begins. You can shop for items on the wish list, wrap them up and drop them off at one of two drop off days; Saturday, December 8 or Saturday, December 15 from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon on both days. The collection location will be the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Clay County Fairgrounds.
ALL-AREA FOOTBALL SOUTH OFFENSE: Four Sailors lead offense, behind bulky interior line
While Wayland Union captured the O-K Gold flag this season, league-rival South Christian made an impression during the postseason. The Sailors are well-represented on the Advance All-Area South Offense, including their quarterback, his favorite receiver, workhorse running back, and captain of the interior line. BRAD SHOUP Kelloggsville, Tackle This 6-4, 235-pound senior was moved to center a year ago due to injuries, then returned to right tackle for his senior season, his third as a starter along the Rockets' offensive line. "Brad is a great kid who worked hard to make himself better. He's really a force on the offensive line, excellent at finishing blocks," Kelloggsville coach Don Galster said. "He got better every week and really became a dominant blocker late in the season." JAY MORREN South Christian, Guard Jay (6-3, 195) excelled on both sides of the football for the playoff-bound Sailors, playing inside linebacker along with offensive guard.

Alice L. Baumann, 86, of Watertown, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Watertown Memorial Hospital, from pneumonia, following a major stroke. She was proud to have survived two courageous bouts with cancer.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown with the Rev. Ray Bezanson of the Advent Christian Church of Watertown, presiding. Burial will be at the River Road Cemetery in Ixonia.Family and friends may call to pay their respects on Monday at the Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be given to the Advent Christian Church or to the charity of choice.Alice was born in Watertown on June 13, 1921, daughter of the late John and Edna (Schroeder) Fredrich.

The toys that fueled our imaginations so many years ago are now called "vintage." So what's a big bad adult supposed to do when a train set just doesn't cut it anymore? The Star-Exponent set forth to find out what this generation of technology-savvy children wants these days. We visited three Culpeper schools - Epiphany Catholic, St. Luke's Lutheran and Culpeper County High - and talked with a boy and girl from every grade to give you, oh clueless grownup, a better shot at getting it right this year.
Lutheran South settles for fourth place plaque
WARRENSBURG - As they gathered on the bleachers for an extended series of pictures with their fourth-place state plaque, the Lutheran South Lancers lingered.South's players, particularly its four seniors, weren't ready for their second straight state final four appearance to come to an end. Especially not the way it went down."After the (St. Francis) Borgia game, I think we left our best game back in St. Louis," said senior middle hitter Emily Mack, in reference to the Lancers' quarterfinal victory. "We were at least expecting to get some revenge from our loss last year, but we just didn't play our best tonight."Mack was refering to Saturday night's third place match at the University of Central Missouri Multipurpose Building, where the Lancers took on Reeds Spring for the second year in a row.
