This Empty Stockings feature is printed every year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving to present the Wish and Need lists of Helena area nonprofit organizations that assist families and individuals in various ways throughout the year.It is heartwarming to see, year after year, your outpouring of love, time, gifts, donations and contributions to help these organizations and agencies help our neighbors in need. A pair of mittens, a basket of food, items such as pencils or a playground ball can make a difference. On behalf of the IR and the organizations who have sent us their lists, thank you the individuals, families, groups, businesses, clubs everyone in our community, for your warmhearted response to past Empty Stockings requests. Happy holidays!RMDC HEAD START200 South Cruse Ave.457-7308

Disney's Hannah Montana doll beats Barbie as 'Most Desired Toy'

New York, Nov 21 (ANI): Disney's Hannah Montana doll, based on the popular TV series, has emerged as the most wanted toy among young girls.

The doll has overtaken Barbie and Bratz as the most desired toy for young girls.

Hannah Montana is an American Emmy Award-nominated teen television series focusing on Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus), who lives a double life as an average teenage girl at school during the day and a famous pop singer at night, concealing her real identity from the public other than her close friends and family.

"It's everything Hannah. She's the hot property, from the doll to the play sets and everything that goes along with it," the New York Daily News quoted Jim Silver, editor in chief of Toy Wishes magazine, which features Cyrus' character on its current cover and includes the singing doll in its coveted "Hot Dozen" holiday toy list, as saying.

Hot toys '07 | Retailers stocking shelves

The first trick-or-treater is barely out the door, and Christmas is already on retailers' minds.

Aisles down from the costumes and candy corn are fake fir trees and candy canes. And Columbia-area merchants are quickly stocking shelves for wide-eyed children — and adults.

Traditional dolls and character plushes, such as Fisher-Price's Tickle Me Elmo and Ganz's Webkinzs, are expected to sell big in Columbia, along with the new video console wonders of PlayStation 3, Xbox and Wii.

The Consumer Electronics Association found that households with Internet access will spend an average of $172 on electronic toys for their children.

In fact, the Guitar Hero III video game and controller set that retails for about $100 has been named an overall top seller this Christmas by Toys "R" Us.

Weber sees Illini need for scoring

By now you should be ready for the 2007-08 men's collegiate basketball season that began recently with exhibition games that left this observer wondering if any upsets would cause reference to football and Appalachian State's defeat of Michigan. For the University of Illinois, the preseason foes were Quincy and Kentucky Wesleyan, members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference of the NCAA Division II level. But on Sunday, the University of Illinois opened its 2007-08 campaign against Northeastern U. of Boston, which posted a 13-19 overall record last season, including a 9-9 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association.Illinois, meanwhile, comes off a 23-12 season, including 9-7 in the Big Ten Conference, that was one of the strangest in school history as the result of six players missing a combined 58 games and 200 practices due to injury.Despite the injuries and using seven different starting lineups, Coach Bruce Weber led Illinois into the first round of the NCAA tournament (and a 54-52 loss to Virginia Tech in which the Illini were outscored 12-0 to end the game). The 23 wins marked the eighth consecutive season that the Illini posted 22 or more victories.

For your gamer's wish list

Someday Mario and Master Chief might replace Santa Claus as spokespeople for the holidays.

Mario and Master Chief are the main characters of two of this season's hottest video games, and unlike jolly ol' St. Nick, all kids believe in Nintendo and Xbox.

As always at this time of year, video games — specifically, the latest video game systems — are on the top of many wish lists. But what kid has the cash to drop on a new piece of hardware that can cost upwards of $500? It's up to the parents to pony up the coin.

"X-Box 360 rocks 'cause the first-person online experience of 'Halo 3' is seamlessly integrated with the wireless technology."

Um. What? Discussing video games with your child requires learning a somewhat foreign language.

Don't worry about it; we'll keep it simple.
