| Escape in ACC quarters launched NC State's miracle run
The scoreboard read North Carolina State 70, Wake Forest 70. Less than a minute remained in an Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinal game that, on a Friday afternoon in March 1983, hardly augured the start of something big. Nobody in The Omni in Atlanta could have known that the events in that final minute would alter the course of college basketball history, the course of Jim Valvano's career -- and, ultimately, the course of his impact upon society. But before the Wolfpack coach could become everything he would become -- the national championship coach, the prominent ESPN basketball analyst, the passionate orator who delivered the most famous sports speech since Lou Gehrig, the national face of the fight against cancer; Jimmy V -- his team had to survive that moment. "If we don't win that game," said State point guard Sidney Lowe, "we're done." If NC State doesn't win that game, an NCAA Tournament berth disappears.

Bargnani chips in despite heavy heart
From a distance, Toronto Raptors rookie Andrea Bargnani looks like a kid. Exceptionally co-ordinated, and unusually tall, but a kid. It was no different last night during the Raptors' 94-81 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at the Air Canada Centre. Bargnani's shooting stroke was as smooth as ever, at least in spurts. He battled men for rebounds and competed to the end. And from a distance, or even up close, you'd never know he was playing with a heavy heart after learning Wednesday his beloved grandfather Giovanni's long-term illness -- Bargnani didn't want to specify -- had turned sharply for the worse. .
Disney hippo pond fight was over card game, police say
A tussle about a card game between two workers in the hippo pond at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom overnight ended with one man doused in gasoline and the other in jail, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The two men, employees of a Disney contractor, got into an argument while cleaning the pond at about 3 a.m., the police report states. One worker, 22-year-old Brandon Hoffman, accused the other of cheating in a card game about two weeks ago. The man he accused, Stephen Kim, poured gasoline on Hoffman and struck a lighter at a distance, said Sheriff's Commander Lester Allen. Hoffman backed away, but then Kim dropped the lighter and picked up a shovel, holding it like a baseball bat and threatening Hoffman with it, according to the police report.
Game Boy Hero Is Addicted to Computer Adventure in New Musical
Matthew Gandolfo and Robin Rothstein's family-friendly musical, The Game Boy, will have its world premiere by Vital Children's Theatre in Manhattan March 10-April 22. In The Game Boy, according to production notes, "Chase loves playing games and always being the best, but when he gets too wrapped up in his new, exciting action adventure computer game to spend time with his friends, he learns the hard way that computers are no replacement for people and winning isn't everything." The pop score is by composer Matthew Gandolfo, with book by Rothstein. Gandolfo and Rothstein co-wrote the lyrics. Mary Catherine Burke directs a cast that includes Julia Arazi, Kallu Duling, Lance Marshall, Andy McKissick, Kristina Wilson and Tim Woods. Performances play Vital Theatre Company at 2162 Broadway, 4th floor, at 76th Street.
