Oregon Recreation Report

Steelhead counts over Willamette Falls have picked up over the last couple of weeks as river temperature has increased. The spring reservoir refill has begun and river flows below the dams will be varying with rainfall and snowmelt. A few fresh steelhead have been picked up in the Willamette near Salem and the lower reaches of the North and South Santiams.Waters scheduled for stocking this week include Henry Hagg Lake, Huddleston Pond, Sheridan Pond, and St. Louis Pond.CLACKAMAS RIVER: The angling conditions improved from last week but are still not ideal. Monday's flows were at 4,180 cfs (13.32') and the water temperature at the hatchery was 39.Overall angling has been slow to fair with the constantly changing water conditions affecting catch rates. Winter steelhead are distributed throughout the river from McIver down to Gladstone, yet hooking into fish is still a challenge.

New Heatseeker Wii trailer online

Codemasters have released a new trailer for their upcoming Wii flight sim, Heatseeker, featuring the Wii control methods used.Heatseeker actually looks rather good so far, giving an admirable impression of speed. After the somewhat lacklustre experience we had with Wing Island, a game like this could revive enthusiasm for Wii-based flight games.Click here to go to the Heatseeker website and download the trailers. To save you wading through hours of flash-based horror, I'll be uploading some Heatseeker trailers to our media server later on this evening.Stay tuned for more news.

A virtual escape from reality

MATHEW HAMILTON reckons he's "too old" for all-nighters, but for eight bleary-eyed hours on a Friday night he immersed himself in World of Warcraft, an online fantasy game that has been likened to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings novels.

"I played from 10.30pm to 6.45am the following morning, stopping only when the kids woke up," he recalls. "That was a first for me on the game and one that I'm not likely to repeat any time soon."

Mr Hamilton, 30, a business analyst from Moorabbin, is part of an estimated 7 million players waging daily battles on World of Warcraft, one of the most popular massive multiplayer online role-playing games on the internet.

World of Warcraft is set in Azeroth - a fantasy world of wizards, orcs, elves and rogues where players battle it out in groups called "parties" and "guilds" for online ranking points.

Verizon Tunes into Mobile Broadcast

Without fanfare, Verizon Wireless launched the nations first mobile broadcast service Thursday in 20 markets, including Albuquerque, N.M., Dallas, Denver and Kansas City. The service is priced between $15 and $25 per month depending on the market, but few further details were announced.

The V CAST Mobile TV, service is delivered on Qualcomm Inc.s MediaFLO mobile TV network. MediaFLO is capable of offering 20 channels, but Verizon will offer just eight channels initially, some with live feeds from the broadcasters cable service, and others that offer time-shifted and on-demand content.

Announced programming partners are CBS, Comedy Central, ESPN, Fox, MTV, NBC News, NBC Entertainment and Nickelodeon. Also, the carrier will offer two mobile television-capable handsets: initially, the SCH-u620 from Samsung Electronics Co.

Sony Slowly Learning Internet PR

Sony's recent dust-up with gaming blog Kotaku over their publication of a Playstation rumor ended up being handled much more quickly than their previous public relations blunders.

We expect Homer Simpson to walk into a rake nine times in a row because he's a cartoon character. Why Sony seems willing and eager to keep committing the same pratfalls has to mystify any reasonable observer.

The gaming blog Kotaku ran down a particularly juicy rumor about Playstation Home. They cautioned it was a rumor and ran the story:

Playstation Home sounds like it could be an interesting, lo-fi, killer app, as described by our source.

"Basically, you get to make an avatar for your console (like a Mii) and this avatar has a room. As you play games and accomplish certain tasks, you will receive items with which to adorn the room that are specific to the game (achievements).

Roulette: Monticello's not the only game in town

Regis Mohawk's casino project at the Monticello Gaming & Raceway. But while that project reaps cheers and jeers in front-page articles around the state, another tribe is quietly playing its hand to build a second casino resort in Sullivan County, located in Bridgeville.

Far from being out of the game, some say the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohicans and Mohegan Sun developer Trading Cove Associates might hold the winning hand.

Sources tell Casino Roulette that the feds are poised to give final environmental approval for their $600 million casino on a 330-acre site north of Exit 107.

"Last we heard, sometime in April, " their lobbyist, Maureen Connelly, said this week.

If you're betting on a casino, there is much to like about the Stockbridge-Munsee's cards. Unlike the Mohawks and their partner Empire Resorts, the Stockbridge-Munsees completed a full environmental impact statement.
