Gaming Trends 02.21.07: Failed Gimmicks

Sometimes, there comes along a gimmick in video games that works so well that it becomes a successful trend others want to copy. Pokemon's "two-game-split", online gaming, music games with totally different peripherals, and more. Unfortunately, there are gimmicks that look good but just don't catch on for some reason. That's what this week's gaming trend's is all about as we look at some of the many failed gimmicks out there. GBA to GC Connectivity Who needs to pay $20 a month when you can pay $280 for 4 GBA's plus $40 for 4 link connectors plus $50 for the game itself ($370 total)? The year is 2003, and the people are ready to take their gaming online. With Microsoft succeeding with Xbox Live and Sony getting somewhat ready, how was Nintendo preparing to go online? Funny thing was...they weren't.

Wii Are No. 1

Nintendo's new Wii has become the best-selling video game system of any kind in January in the United States, and the fastest-selling new-generation home system. According to the independent NPD Group, Wii sold through 435,503 systems to customers in its January reporting period. By comparison, that's 70 percent higher than any other new video game system in its first January of availability during the last 10 years.

In addition, Nintendo DS once again triumphed as the top-selling portable system, with nearly 239,000 hardware and more than 2.4 million software units sold. In combination, Nintendo game systems accounted for nearly as many unit sales (46 percent of the total market) as those of all other manufacturers combined.

The continuing success of Wii and DS demonstrates that the public has embraced Nintendo's philosophy of entertaining current gamers in new ways, and expanding gaming for the masses.

Game on Like Donkey Kong

Baseball fans, today's the home opener for the Washington Nationals at Space Coast Stadium. Gates open at 11:30 am for a 1:05 pm start.

We just wanted to send out a head's up to area baseball fans that although the weather has been overcast and drizzly, the rain has stopped, the tarp if off the field and the game is on so don't change your plans to attend today's action. The Washington Nationals host the Baltimore Orioles...fans will receive a Nationals long-sleeve t-shirts as a giveaway today.

The stadium is renovated and a lot of work went into upgrading the facility to make it a much more fan-friendly facility. The Manatees would like to thank the Nationals the Brevard County Commissioners for making this upgrade a reality because fans are going to enjoy the improvements.

We could write for pages, but there are a lot of changes at the stadium and you need to come see 'em for yourself! Even Ovations, the stadium's concessionaire, has new rolling food and drink carts positioned to shorten your time at concession windows.

R15 feels like home

Picture this, you walk though a beautiful patio which takes you to two large double doors. You enter a large space that is intimately lighted with what appears to be red shot glasses on the ceiling. Warm colors such as red and yellow surround you. Large plasma televisions hang above your head and appetizing smells fill your nostrils. This may be your future home, but it's actually your local downtown bar, R15.

The name completely gives away this fabulous location that is the R15 Bar at night and Caf Bernardo by day, and home is exactly the feel that it's going for. This bar/caf is located in the heart of downtown right next to Empire nightclub. It opened Sep. 8 of 2006.

The large building is divided into three sections. When entering you immediately face the bar, which is the center and main attraction.
