Online Exclusive: Penguins look for revenge, tournament victory ...

Feeling confident after its first playoff victory in 12 years, the Youngstown State University basketball team will look to advance another round with a win Friday against UW-Green Bay in Dayton.

The fifth-seeded Penguins (14-16) captured a victory over Detroit for two reasons: a career-high 31 points by senior guard Keston Roberts and reversing a season-long trend of first-half scoring droughts.

Roberts scored the first 10 points of the game and helped YSU jump out to a 14-point halftime lead, a pleasant surprise for a team that has often had to fight back from halftime deficits.

UW-Green Bay (17-14) won both meetings against the Penguins this season, but senior Dwight Holmes is confident that this game could be a different story.

"We know how to play against them now," Holmes said.

PC columnist Dvorak: Wii will "dominate the future of gaming"

Wii media praise #2,457: The Andy Rooney of PC columns, John C. Dvorak, recently got his hands on Wii. Sure he's about three months late to the party, but that didn't stop the self-proclaimed non-gamer from predicting good things for the little white box, if on the back of Wii Sports: Bowling alone."My experience with this toy tells me that a fundamental change has taken place in game play-and it's all down to the controller," says Dvorak. He continues, "It changes all the rules and will dominate the future of gaming. You watch." Dvorak sure likes his forecasts. Still, having this little snippet of praise read by the millions of PC Magazine subscribers can only help.Nintendo, meet your Walt Mossberg. Morris shrugs off taunts on road

Whether he likes it or not, University of Kentucky center Randolph Morris is a heckler's dream.

Opposing fans have come to realize that disrupting the 6-foot-11 junior who leads the Wildcats in scoring (15.4 points per game) and rebounding (7.5 per game) could greatly increase their team's chance of winning.

So the astute ones relentlessly taunt him about the one thing that he might never live down - his failure to get picked in the 2005 NBA draft before his sophomore season.

"As of right now, Tennessee would be the one that (stands out)," Morris said in between laughs Friday afternoon. "They say stuff like, 'Go to the NBDL (development league),' 'Where's your agent now?' So they get pretty creative there."

But if fans think they will ever bother the remarkably calm Morris, they are wasting their time.

Ags Can Revel but Have Work to Do

LOGAN -- Utah State coach Stew Morrill told his team to revel in its 79-77 overtime victory over No. 10 Nevada Thursday night, but he also reminded the Aggies there is still more work to do.

"They need to enjoy it (the win) and be excited, but I reminded them real quickly of the importance of the Fresno State game in terms of the standings and where we want to finish," he said.

Tonight's 7 p.m. contest with Fresno State will determine third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings, which will place the winner in the opposite bracket of nationally ranked Nevada for next week's conference tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

Besides the ramifications involving the standings, it's Senior Night for Chaz Spicer, Chris Session and Durrall Peterson, and the Aggies could finish the regular season undefeated (14-0) for the second time in three years.

Beating the math trap

As the leaders of an organization whose mission is "to help all elementary students succeed in math," we are often asked, "How do you fix the math WASL problem?" Through the experience that Explorations in Math has gained working in 16 elementary schools in economically and racially diverse communities, we support the "four P's" of math education reform: policy, priority, professional development and play.

As with all large-scale challenges, there is not one single answer that is going to raise WASL math scores across Washington from 59 percent in fourth grade and 51 percent in 10th grade to 90 percent in both years. Statements such as: "We need to get rid of the WASL. We need to go back to the basics in teaching math; drill and kill. We need to throw away math text books and allow children to learn math through feelings," are alluring in times of frustration.

Video Game Madness Reaches UCSC

In the late hours of one Saturday night last January and into the next morning, hundreds of students gathered in a stifling, dimly lit room to stare into numerous luminescent screens.

The clamor of thumping background music blaring from speakers was coupled with echoing screams of victory and agitation. Many remained in the room for hours, leaving only to nourish themselves with a candy bar from vending machines nearby.

These are the gamers of UC Santa Cruz, and the curious scene is the fourth annual Porter College Video Game Tournament, where gamers come together for a night of individual tournaments for popular video games on all systems.

Erik Bursch, a 2006 graduate, actually returned to UCSC to compete in the tournament.

"Of course I came back for this," Bursch said, after a successful three-hour session of Super Smash Brothers.
