Cyber space multipliers

The Court of First Instance in Brussels had ruled on February 13 that Google's practice of syndicating newspaper headlines along with snippets of text to link to articles, constituted an infringement of Belgium's copyright law. The newspaper in question did not have objections to being linked on Google but to the fact that it was not being paid enough. One would imagine, given the pace at which Google is growing, that newspapers would realise the benefits of allowing Google to link to them at nominal prices. The notion of copyright infringement needs to be revisited because the publicity and awareness that follow from a site such as Google will in fact propel newspapers, such as the Belgian one, to international fame and bring them more profit than any fee paid by Google could.

The same can be said of books.

WISCONSIN; Stiemsma Getting an Opportunity; With Butch Out ...

Madison It's Senior Day for the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team and before the game against Michigan State this morning, the Badgers will honor Alando Tucker, Kammron Taylor and Jason Chappell.

Greg Stiemsma's role in the ceremony will be minimal. Like the rest of the team, he'll stand and applaud the three for nearly 100 victories in four seasons, a run fans will remember was made possible by Tucker's leadership, Taylor's determination and Chappell's dirty work.

A year from now it will be Stiemsma's turn. How will fans remember him?

Here we are at the end of his junior season and we still don't know how close he is to reaching the full scope of his potential. Because of injuries, illness, academic issues and, this season, the team's depth, the 6-foot-11, 260-pound junior has played just 471 minutes at UW.

Nintendo Wii Porn Hysteria Continues

The Wii porn scare saddens us here at Revolution Portal, because it shows a fundamental lack of understanding at best, and malicious media whoring at worst.   Can a person access porn on Nintendo Wii?  You betcha.   Is there an easy parental control to make sure kids can't get at it?  Yes — so it's really a non-issue.

Nevertheless, the hoopla continues.  Here's the latest press release from a group that thinks that Nintendo's console has a "dirty little secret", courtesy of Kotaku:

The Nintendo Wii gaming console has a wiittle porn problem. That's right; this seemingly innocent family game console has a dirty little secret. It has the dubious ability to access pornography via the internet and most parents are not aware of this fact according to www.ThePornTalk.com

Like many new gaming technologies, the Wii's wireless internet capabilities make it a portal to porno.

Notes: Livan handles heavy workload

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Livan Hernandez said he typically does not have good Spring Trainings, but he didn't look too shabby in his first outing on Friday.

"Outstanding," manager Bob Melvin said of Hernandez, who allowed one run on three hits over three innings. Hernandez threw 52 pitches, which is more than most starters throw their first time out, but he likes a heavy workload early in the spring to help strengthen his arm.

Veteran pitchers like Hernandez typically use Spring Training to get their work in, and if they post good numbers, it's just a bonus.

"He made some pitches when he had to," Melvin said. "For a guy like him, it's more about work, but it looked like he competed pretty hard when he had to today."

Hernandez said he was pleased with his curveball, but the right-hander is still working on perfecting his two-seam sinking fastball.

Music to Gamer Ears

Two decades ago, all you needed to re-create the soundtrack from a top video game was a cheap kazoo. Frogger and Donkey Kong were fun to play, but the repetitive synthesized scores usually ranged from kind of grating to headache-inducing hideousness.

On Friday night, thousands will pack the Nob Hill Masonic Center Auditorium in San Francisco specifically to listen to video game music, at a local performance of Video Games Live. There will be a full symphony and a choir. And, along with several other composers, Nintendo's Koji Kondo -- the Chuck Berry of video-game music -- will perform one of his original themes live.

Video Games Live executive producer Tommy Tallarico says the performance wouldn't have been possible a decade ago, before video game music underwent a huge renaissance in the late 1990s.
